Aidan Carroll’s Original Vision

I had the great privilege of chatting with bassist, composer, and producer Aidan Carroll yesterday. We talked about breaking into the scene in New York, touring with singers Melody Gardot and Lisa Fischer, and making Original Vision, his debut album as a leader, which dropped on March 3rd. Aidan has great insights into the dynamics of recording sessions, the post-production creative process, songwriting, and the business of being a musician; I feel fortunate to be able to include his voice in my dissertation.

Check out the music video for “Sundays,” featuring Chris Turner.

Then buy the record here or here, check out Aidan’s live dates here, and stay connected with him here and here.

Inaugural Post at “Space is the Place”

I am honored to be taking the helm at the “Space Is the Place: Ethnomusicology of Jazz” subsection of Sounding Board at Ethnomusicology Review.

The first post is my interview with the great New York-based pianist and ethnomusicologist David DeMotta. We chatted about his doctoral dissertation on the music of Bud Powell. Check it out!
